Did the shotspotters work?

Shot spotters are a waste of money. The victim has already been shot and the perpetrator is gone by the time the sheriff arrives.

🚨Brookhaven Police Seek Public’s Help Locating Suspect in Commercial Cable Theft Investigation 🚨

Brookhaven, GA – February 26, 2026 – The Brookhaven Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 36-year-old Michael A. McKay in connection with a commercial cable theft that occurred on February 25, 2026, at approximately 4:30 a.m., near an apartment complex located between Clairmont Road and Briarwood Road along the Northeast Expressway corridor.

An officer observed an unoccupied U-Haul truck stopped in the turn lane leading onto Northeast Expressway from the upper parking deck entrance of the complex. The vehicle was found with its lights off, the engine running, and the doors unlocked. A search of the area did not locate a driver or any other individuals. Communications cable cut from overhead utility lines and reduced into smaller sections was located on the sidewalk and inside the cargo area of the truck, along with tools commonly used in cable thefts.

Approximately 119 sections of cable were recovered. An AT&T representative confirmed the cable belonged to AT&T and reported that approximately $500,000 worth of cable has been stolen along the DeKalb County side of Northeast Expressway over the past six months. The vehicle and recovered property were secured for further investigation. Detectives determined that McKay was involved in the incident and obtained arrest warrants charging him with Criminal Damage to Property (Felony) and Criminal Attempt to commit Theft by Taking (Felony).

McKay is described as a black male, approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing about 170 pounds and is known to wear his hair in cornrows or a full afro. This case remains under active investigation. Anyone with information regarding McKay’s whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477). Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.

If you know the whereabouts of Michael A. McKay and wish to remain anonymous, you can submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers. A reward of up to $5,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.

On February 26, 2026, Nineteen Indicted Following Year-Long Dogfighting Investigation in Twiggs County

Twiggs County, Georgia — Nineteen individuals have been indicted following a year-long investigation into an alleged dogfighting operation in Twiggs County, the result of an extensive, coordinated effort by local, state, federal, and nonprofit partners committed to protecting animals and public safety.

The investigation was led by the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office and conducted in close partnership with the Office of the District Attorney, with critical assistance from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the United States Department of Agriculture, the ASPCA, the Atlanta Humane Society, LaGrange Animal Control, and Laurens County Animal Control.

The indictments, returned by a Twiggs County grand jury, allege that the defendants participated in organized dogfighting activities in violation of Georgia law. The charges stem from a comprehensive investigation involving surveillance, the execution of search warrants, recovery of animals, and the collection of evidence related to animal cruelty and illegal dogfighting practices.

“This case reflects the dedication and persistence of law enforcement and our partners over the course of more than a year,” said Sheriff Darren Mitchum. “Dogfighting is not only an act of extreme cruelty to animals, but it is often associated with other forms of criminal activity that endanger our communities.”

Harold McLendon of the Office of the District Attorney emphasized the importance of collaboration in bringing the case forward. “This investigation demonstrates what can be accomplished when agencies work together toward a common goal,” he said. “We are grateful for the expertise and commitment of each agency involved, particularly those responsible for the rescue, care, and evaluation of the animals affected.”

The Georgia Department of Agriculture and animal-welfare partners played a critical role in the seizure, care, and placement of dogs recovered during the investigation. The ASPCA, Atlanta Humane Society, Angels for the Underdogs, and LaGrange Animal Control provided specialized support to ensure the animals received appropriate medical attention, behavioral assessment, and humane treatment.

Violations of Georgia’s RICO Act and dogfighting statutes are felony offenses under Georgia law. The Office of the District Attorney will prosecute the cases in Twiggs County Superior Court. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Additional information will be released as appropriate as the cases proceed through the judicial process.
