A high-speed chase down Highway 49 on Friday ended with the arrest of a Warner Robins man and the discovery of a child and contraband in his vehicle, according to the Jones County Sheriff's Office.
There has been considerable discussion regarding school speed zone cameras over the past year. Although numerous comments have been unfounded, I will provide a brief factual overview.
The law, enacted in 2018, permits the use of cameras, with cities having the option to participate. Macon Bibb County, along with numerous jurisdictions in Georgia, opted in.
It is essential to note that these cameras are authorized by state law and are deemed constitutional. Moreover, they have only been utilized within the legally designated timeframes and in front of authorized schools.
Currently, two bills are under consideration in the State legislature. We have a contractual agreement with the licensed camera provider in Georgia and await the State's decision before changes can be made. Nevertheless, I intend to proceed with limited camera operation during arrival and dismissal times only, unless the legislature dictates otherwise.
Meanwhile, I have requested our county attorneys to review the process for drafting and approving a local bill which would be sent to the state, enabling the county to hold a public referendum on this matter. At that time, the community could choose whether to have the cameras operate at limited times or disband then altogether.
It is my hope that this will be an acceptable disposition of this matter, since we here from people who support and oppose the cameras.
