MEDIA RELEASE
OFFICE OF THE SHERIFF
BIBB COUNTY, GA.
DAVID J. DAVIS SHERIFF
October 8, 2026
Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Is Alerting the Public to Beware of Law Enforcement Scams
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to an ongoing scam involving individuals impersonating deputies and asking family members of incarcerated individuals to send money for their release.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that a deputy will never call and demand immediate payment or bail money to prevent or resolve an arrest warrant. An arrest warrant is served in person, and you will be transported to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. There is no fee to get out of an arrest warrant. There is a booking process when being booked into the jail and they will let you know if your offense/charge is a bondable offense. Once the booking process is completed, if the offense is bondable, a family member or acquaintance can make bond for the incarcerated person, in person or with the bonding company assistance.
What You Should Do
If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from law enforcement:
Hang up immediately.
Do not send any money, gift cards, or personal information.
Verify the information independently. Look up the official phone number for the jail, Sheriff’s office, or courthouse yourself. Do not use a phone number provided by the caller or rely on caller ID.
Contact the appropriate law enforcement agency directly to determine whether your loved one is in custody or requires assistance with a legitimate bond.
Do not send money to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office for the release of an incarcerated individual.
Report the scam to your local law enforcement agency..
How to recognize phone scams being run by inmates from inside a jail, there are several common warning signs:
Scammers may:
Claim to be a relative or friend who is in trouble and urgently needs money.
Impersonate a law enforcement officer, jail employee, attorney, or bondsman and demand immediate payment.
Request payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, Cash App, Zelle, or prepaid cards, particularly while instructing you not to tell anyone.
Pressure you to remain on the phone while making a payment.
Request sensitive personal information, including your Social Security number, date of birth, banking information, PINs, or account passwords.
Use collects calls or unfamiliar phone numbers and attempt to move the conversation to another number or messaging service.
Claim there is an emergency involving bail, medical expenses, or another inmate while discouraging you from contacting the jail or the individual’s family directly.
Caller ID can be misleading, so don't rely on the displayed number.
Remember "The Bibb County Sheriff's Office will never call you and ask for money even if your loved one is currently being housed inside the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center".
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office does not do business in any of these manners. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office will not make threatening calls regarding arrest warrants, negotiate releases, or insist on payment of fines. If you receive a similar call, write down the number that the scammer is calling from and the name they used. Go to www.Bibbsheriff.us and under contact us, you can report this information to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
Anyone with information on any individual who is impersonating a Law Enforcement Deputy is urged to call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or call the Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
